The Trainer’s profile

All AFA MSP® trainers have undergone the rigorous approvals process administered by the APM Group on behalf of the Office of Government Commerce (OGC). They are practising project and programme managers with considerable experience in a wide range of industry sectors. The use of hybrid trainer-managers is of great benefit to delegates and ensures that illustration and anecdotes have up-to-date validity and that the training given, whilst being true to the syllabus is also pragmatic.

The training is conducted by Alan Ferguson's who is AFA's Lead Trainer and Consultant. He has gained the prestigious registered consultant recognition in Programme & Project Management, MSP® and PRINCE2®. Alan delivers consultancy around the world and his book 'Tailoring PRINCE2®' has sold thousands of copies.

The training (14-17 June) is conducted by John Vivian, MSP® Approved Trainer. A senior project and programme manager with extensive experience in managing the development, introduction and implementation of new technology. An accomplished trainer, coach and facilitator, able to effectively transfer his skills and experience, and to motivate staff at all levels. Broad international experience in both public and private sectors, and at all levels including national and regional politicians and senior government officials (national clearances).

Training duration

This course takes place over four days. The Foundation exam is taken during the afternoon of day three and the Practitioner exam is taken during the afternoon of day four. A Foundation pass is a pre-requisite for sitting the Practitioner examination. Evening consolidation and preparation work is required in order to gain maximum benefit from the course.


Place of training

AFA open courses are held at approximately six week intervals at a range of venues across the UK. All venues have been chosen for their modern equipment and ease of access from major road, rail and air routes.

Alternatively training may be organized at the Client’s site or in an appropriate place near by.

Training organization and costs

A place for one participant in an open training costs 6705 PLN. Included in the cost of the course are:

• OGC publication “Managing Successful Programmes“
• Printed course material
Examination fee (includes a second approach to the Practitioner exam for free)
• Daytime refreshments
• Full catering during the training


MSP® manual is sent to delegates approximately 2-3 weeks before the course start date.Typically pre-course preparation will require a couple of hours of study.
